The Photography Background – Instantly Create Better Photography!

If you are fascinated with photography – and wish to get your pictures to a whole new, higher level – the important thing to success would be the photography background!

Among the significant distinctions between amateur and expert photography is the pro has learned to manage and manipulate the photography background – where the amateur focuses all their concentration on the subject and typically merely lets the background happen on its own.

Have you ever been so caught up in your subject and lights and so forth that (when you examine the finished photograph) you see an enormous waste can – right behind your subject – spilling rubbish all over the ground? In every photo? Plus you didn’t even see it during the photo session!

Or, maybe you’ve been guilty of having tree branches seeming to erupt from the model’s head, like horns?

They are stupid errors which can be effortlessly handled and will rapidly enhance your photography’s effectiveness.

The bad news is we don’t really notice how much better our photos are! Let us face it; if you do not have rubbish or horns and so forth, you never pause to consider how significantly better your photo is…you simply do not notice. Our notice only comes to bear if we forget and screw up (we all do every so often).

If you would like admiration for your creative accomplishments, you CANNOT allow these problems into your pictures. It’s an easy repair…merely remember to look at the background and all four corners inside the viewfinder before you click the shutter button – after that you modify accordingly.

If you have a tough time remembering, take a strip of masking tape and record – in large black letters – “CHECK THE BACKDROP”. Then attach the tape on the rear of the camera. It will help remind you until it turns into a habit.

You won’t ever know the number of photos you’ve saved, but it’s worth the effort.

The following simplest photography background practice – to make your subject “explode” out of your shot – is to isolate them.

I am sure you’ve looked at pictures where the subject is in clear, sharp focus – but the backdrop is completely out of focus and is only a wash of color.

It’s done with manipulating the depth of field.

Depth of field determines just how much of the photograph is in focus. One can find whole books written concerning this photo technique (heck, I penned one myself!) but the easiest ways to accomplish this “wash of color” technique are to:

1. Utilize the longest focal length lens possible.
2. Set it to the widest aperture workable – this is the lowest f-stop numeral.
3. Make the backdrop as far behind the subject as is feasible. Or put the subject as far in front of the background as possible.

Without a doubt each one of the three steps has a variety of variables. By adjusting the choices open to you, you can make your photography background as focused or unfocused as you want. There is not any right or wrong.

Entirely out of focus, partly in focus, sharp as a tack…this is now where your creative eye comes into play.

After you’ve mastered your “in camera” methods of manipulating the backgrounds, after that it is time to consider creating a few cloth backdrops. This will give your projects a pro “studio” appearance.

A first rate quality background can literally cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Therefore, in lieu of dishing out the big bucks, I recommend creating your own. Happily a photography background is easy to generate and can be made for pennies on the dollar.
